This is a very serious short entry, so your opinion matter a whole lot. Yesterday I walked in on my co-workers talking about African Americans (black, negros, etc) in a so not positive manner. They were talking about Obama and why they wouldn’t vote for him and it’s as if they were stating that the country will never be ready for a black president and if Obama is elected then he should be assassinated so Biden can be president.
I don’t really care if my co-workers like Black folks or not, but such a conversation shouldn’t have taken place at the office. The funny thing is, when they noticed that I was out there, they quickly changed the conversation and I said continue on with the subject. I didn’t jump in the debate because I was afraid that I would say something stupid and somewhat question their ignorance.
How would you have reacted? They have never mistreated me or said anything offending to me, so how should I approach the situation? Your thoughts!

*What's That Growling Noise?*
The WORD wonders. That growling noise could be his stomach. Maybe it’s the
backhoe digging up the front yard. Or, more like...

I think you did the right thing babe. by telling them to continue with the subject, you let them know that you heard them but will not partake in the conversation, they were probably taken back because they may have expect you to say something defensive.
ReplyDeleteI would have done the same thing, however this is beyond ignorance, this is racism. Eventhough it is not directed towards you, but it is taking place in the work place and i am sure it's uncomfortable to know that your co-workers have such opinions. There is nothing you can do now because, while it's sad to say,but this is America and you will find many that have racist comments toward Obama and the black Race, i think this is only expected in this presidential campaign. Racism still exist!!!Pay attention and see if the racist comments are still going on, if they are, then maybe you need to bring it to the attention of the supervisor. This may be tricky because the boss (if white) may have the same views and i wouldnt want any retaliation to take place and again since the racial comments were not directed towards you, all you can go by is that they have no place in the work place and that such comments are uncomfortable.

I would probably jumped into the conversation and offer my two cents. I guess the great Poison man cannot stand the heat. Coward!
ReplyDeletewhy he got to be a Coward, it was at work, he got to keep it professional. something similar happen in school, it was during a class discussion, this white kid said that Obama will get assassinated, so i had to say something to him. what i come to realise ignorant and racist people are everywhere and regardless, they will always feel the way they feel, so let them be.
ReplyDeleteKnowing me and my temper, I would have let them know directly that their comments were innapropriate, racist and unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteHad I not let them know what I've heard and how I felt about it, I would have walked out of there with anger, slammed the door and taken the rest of the day off, to blow off some steam.
What's up with your co-workers anyway? Somebody is either masturbating or talking racist crap. ???
No I would not have been offended a tad bit...what are the odds that if you would have addressed them that it would have made a slight difference in their opinion towards people of color or even Obama...ignorance is a way of living..it has no gender, race, sex, or age...so by you not feeding into their nonsense should have showed them who was the real nigger!!!!! And listening to "Simply Me" will leave you jobless...lol...
